There seemed to be two main desired outcomes of this session:
Municipal Data Standardization:
1.) An entity like DC.gov should lead the way in terms of creating the standard method by which municipal governments publish their data, so that when things like Apps for Democracy happen, applications can be easily extended to serve other metropolitan areas by simply swapping out data feeds. If data standardization can be driven across municipal governments, national innovation contests (whether sponsored by .gov, .org, .edu, .com or .mil’s) can be put in place to solve common problems across all geographies in one quick shot…saving all participating municipalities the individual costs of developing their on one-off solutions. DC’s Data Catalog is a good start
Open Government Directive Development:
2.) The Obama administration’s Memorandum on Transparency and Open Government requires the OMB, GSA and Federal CTO to craft an Open Government Directive that will set the course of how this philosophy can become a reality. Sheila Campbell (GSA, Co-chair the Federal Web Managers Council) mentioned a draft of that directive is in the works and will be presented on a public wiki for commentary and collaboration soon. Sheila ask that Transparency Camp attendees get together this weekend to provide input into what the recommendation should be for publishing data for maximum interoperability.
